Secret Wealth Behind Ordinary Life · Chapter 4

Chapter 1 — Ordinary People

Monday, 8:40 a.m. Midtown Manhattan.

Irene Thorne stood at the mouth of the subway station, holding a two-dollar, seventy-five-cent cup of drip coffee, and looked down at the canvas sneakers she had been wearing for three years. Then she looked up at the glass tower across the street, the one with STERLING TECH written across the sky in silver letters. Sunlight hit the building and made it gleam like a polished coin.

She exhaled. Okay. Another beautiful day. The mortal kind.

The office elevator was packed. The girls from Admin chattered about weekend brunch, limited-edition bags, and whose husband got promoted. Irene squeezed into the corner, as quiet as part of the wallpaper. Her job today was the same as yesterday and the day before: organize files for Marketing, run errands for Admin, absorb the work nobody else wanted, and then, before she could go home, listen to Mila Lopez say, in her sweet and poisonous voice—

"Irene, sweetheart, I looked at your spreadsheet. The formatting is wrong. Redo it, would you? Oh, and could you handle the materials for this afternoon's meeting too? You know I'm just slammed."

Mila Lopez. The office flower. Twenty-five, twenty-three thousand Instagram followers, and a personal philosophy that could be summed up in six words: win, or pretend to win. She click-clacked past Irene's desk in heels like a peacock patrolling its territory, pausing her gaze on the canvas sneakers for a precise half-second.

"Irene, honey," Mila said, beaming, "those shoes… they're from Target, right? Adorable. Very… collegiate."

A few stifled snickers rippled through the room.

Irene felt nothing. If she felt anything, it was that "collegiate" was a hilarious word to apply to a thirty-one-year-old pure-blood heir who secretly oversaw half the world's invisible capital. She smiled, mild and harmless. "They're comfortable."

Mila walked away satisfied. Mila would never learn the one lesson the universe kept trying to teach her: when you insult someone who doesn't care, you insult yourself. It didn't matter, Irene thought. She didn't need to teach anyone anything. She just needed to live quietly. It was the only privilege she had traded an entire universe to buy.

Ordinary life is the only luxury wealth can never buy.

She never said that out loud. She had told it to herself the night she left the Aethel estate, standing in her own empty penthouse, sealing half her bloodline's power and locking her trillions, her family crest, her inheritance, into a vault she swore she would never open again. Then she took a red-eye to New York and got a job that paid forty-two hundred a month. She wanted to try it. To feel what it was like to be loved, hated, and needed by ordinary people. Even the being-hated part.

At ten o'clock, everything changed.

HR's Janet came sprinting into Admin, face flushed like a fire alarm. "Quick! Quick! Kalen Black is here! B-round financing meeting! Everyone back at your desks! Tuck in your shirts! Do not let him catch you on your phones!"

The whole floor hit fast-forward.

Kalen Black. The youngest top-tier investment-bank president on Wall Street. A man who had climbed to the peak of mortal capital by twenty-nine. Legend said his gaze priced things like a machine. Legend said he had turned down three digits' worth of heiresses. Legend said he never blinked in negotiations. Legends were plentiful, but Irene only cared about one thing—whether he would ruin her lunch break.

The elevator doors opened a second time while Irene stood in the hallway clutching a stack of printouts, headed for the copy room. She looked up and collided with a pair of gray eyes.

It was the second time that morning she had seen Kalen Black.

The first time had been three minutes ago, in the elevator. Mila had been plastered against her friend, using every muscle in her body to perform "elegantly standing near Kalen Black's sleeve," and Irene had been jammed into the corner, hugging her printouts like a quiet houseplant. Kalen had looked at no one. Then, as the doors opened and he stepped aside to let people out, his gaze swept across her face—

and paused.

Irene couldn't say how long the pause lasted. A tenth of a second? She only knew something in those gray eyes had flickered, like metal crossing water. Then he was gone, and Mila chased after him like a puppy chasing a limousine.

And now: the second time. She with her printouts, he in the elevator, flanked by a row of suits. The hallway went silent for a full two seconds.

Kalen Black said nothing. He simply looked at her, his gaze as calm as a balance sheet. Then he spoke, in a voice that carried down the hall to every single ear: "Your copy room is on the other side of the stairwell."

Then he left with his entourage, leaving a hallway full of open mouths.

Mila shoved her way out of the crowd, white-faced. "He—he was talking to me! He was totally talking to me! He saw me!"

"I think he was talking to Irene," someone whispered.

Mila's smile froze, then pitched up an octave. "Irene? Seriously? She's standing there holding papers, he just didn't want her to run into him! Come on—a Target-sneaker admin girl? Kalen Black is going to give her a second look? Please."

Everyone nodded. It made perfect sense.

Only Irene stayed where she was, watching the man's back disappear around the corner, her fingertips tightening on the stack. On top of the printouts sat a small card—her ID badge, which had been dropped and picked up and replaced without her noticing. It had her name on the front: IRENE THORNE.

On the back, in aggressive handwriting, as if written quickly with a fountain pen, was a single line:

Ms. Thorne — have we met before?

Irene turned the badge over. Her face showed nothing. But for one fraction of a second, as she read the line, a cold light passed behind her eyes.

No, she thought. You haven't. But you almost, almost just recognized me.
