Vampire's Contract Love · Chapter 9

Chapter 8 — The Fragment

Kael's statement landed like a bomb.

Within a day, the vampire world was quoting it. Within two days, the Moon faction was pretending it had never leaked anything. Within three days, the Council had—reluctantly—announced that the match would be reviewed "in due course."

Lila, meanwhile, had become two different people: a gold-digging whore on the human internet, and a figure of fascination in the vampire one—the human who had made the Lord of the Nocturne line declare her his.

She handled it the way she handled everything: by working. She took three commissions. She painted until her fingers cramped. She didn't think about Kael Voss's hands, or his statement, or the way he'd said mine like it was a wound.

And then, one night, alone in the study, she found the second piece.

A drawer. Mis-filed. A file with no label, tucked between old maps. She shouldn't have opened it. She opened it.

Inside: medical reports. Subject: Kael Voss. Condition: Curse Backlash—Stage III. Prognosis notes in a cramped hand. A list of symptoms: loss of sensation. Loss of color perception. The slow death of everything that made a life worth living. And at the bottom, underlined, in the same cramped hand:

Only a bond with a living, pure-blooded vessel can reverse the decay. The vessel must be sustained. Consent optional.

Consent optional.

Lila read it three times.

She thought about the burned paper in her pocket. Pure blood. Curse backlash. Continuous supply.

She thought about his hands—studying his own palm in the dark.

She thought about the moment he'd smelled her blood and his pupils had gone dark red, and the greed he'd barely restrained.

And she understood, with a clarity that hurt worse than any knife, what she was.

She was the vessel.

Not the partner. The medicine.

That night, she didn't sleep. In the morning, she made breakfast—toast, eggs, coffee she still didn't drink—and waited for him in the kitchen.

Kael appeared at dawn, as he always did after the night's work. He stopped when he saw her sitting there, very still, in the morning light.

"You're up early," he said.

"I found your file," Lila said. "In the study. The one about the curse."

The silence was absolute.

Kael's face went very, very still—the stillness of a man caught. "You read—"

"I read it." Lila's voice was steady. "So. You didn't hire a partner. You found a medicine cabinet. 'The vessel must be sustained. Consent optional.' How much of the five million was payment, and how much was hush money?"

Kael didn't answer.

For a long moment, he just stood there, dawn breaking behind him, looking at her like she'd cut him open.

Then he said, very quietly: "You were supposed to be a tool."

"I know."

"It was never supposed to—" He stopped. His jaw worked. "The contract. The performance. It was supposed to be clean. I was supposed to use you for a year and let you go, and neither of us was supposed to—"

"To what?" Lila's voice cracked, just once. "To feel something? To make me think the 'partner' part was real?"

Kael's eyes were black now, black and unreadable. "I didn't know," he said, and his voice was barely a whisper, "that I would start to—"

He didn't finish.

Lila stood up, very slowly. She looked at him—at the man who had counted her heartbeat, who had declared her mine to the entire vampire world, who had burned his bridges for her—and she felt the whole beautiful lie collapse inside her chest.

"I'll finish the year," she said, quietly. "I'll keep performing. You get your freedom, and your—" She couldn't say medicine. "—your cure."

"Lila—"

"Contract's a contract." She smiled, and it was the emptiest smile she'd ever made. "Rules are rules. Even ones made to be broken."

She walked past him, out of the kitchen, out of the morning light.

Kael stood alone in the sun he couldn't feel, and the dawn hit his face like an accusation.
