Wolf Guardian's Secret Love · Chapter 9

Chapter Six: The Trap (1)

The Border closed around her like a fist.

Kael moved her out of the tower—too obvious now—into the abandoned crypt beneath the old chapel, the one everyone believed had collapsed in the first surge. It had not collapsed. It was dry, and hidden, and Kael had used it for a decade as a place to think, which meant it was cold and smelled like dust and felt like a tomb.

It felt like a tomb, Lila told him, cheerfully, while she built a fire from a broken pew.

"It's a crypt," she said. "Of course it's a tomb. I've slept in worse. I once slept in a dead man's coffin for three days. He was very polite. Didn't complain at all."

Kael, checking the seals on the crypt door, did not dignify this with a response.

For three days, the Border held its breath.

The hawks searched. Elaine Cross combed the camps, the towers, the armories, the granaries. She questioned every guardian personally, and she did it with a smile, and she let them all go, and she let them all know that she had let them go.

On the fourth night, she found what she was looking for.

Not the crypt. Not the witch.

The shape of Kael's absence.

"You left the wall," she said, in the garrison hall, before the entire company, her voice carrying like a bell. "Two nights before the cleansing, at the second bell, you were seen on the eastern parapet. Not patrolling. Not inspecting. *Leaving*. Tell me, Commander Voss—where does a guardian of the Law go, in the middle of the night, on the night before a cleansing, alone?"

The hall was silent. Every eye on Kael.

He stood at attention, face empty, and said: "I went to check the eastern nest. It surged the next morning. I was checking what I expected to surge."

"Was that before or after you drove an iron spike through its foundation?" Elaine's voice was silk. "The nest was *salty*. Someone had been there. Someone with guardian blood. Someone who wanted it to surge *on schedule*."

The silence sharpened. Even Rhett's color drained.

"Interesting theory," Kael said.

"Isn't it." Elaine smiled, slow and cold. "But I don't need a theory, Commander. I need a fact. And I think I know exactly where to find one."

She turned to the map on the wall—the map of the Border, with every tower, every camp, every structure marked—and she put her finger on one spot.

The old chapel.

"Five days ago, a patrol reported wight tracks converging on the chapel's eastern edge. Unusual, they said. Nothing to nest in, they said." She tapped the map. "But I've been thinking. A man with a secret would want a place no one visits. A place the world has forgotten. A place like—" she looked up, and her smile was a blade, "—a collapsed crypt."

Rhett's breath caught.

Kael did not move a muscle. Inside, something in his chest was screaming.

"So here is my proposal, Commander," Elaine said, turning to face the room, her voice ringing. "Tomorrow at dawn, we will burn the chapel. Just the chapel. We'll dig it out, salt the foundation, and if there's anything in that crypt, it will come out running, and the hawks will catch it. If there's nothing—" she spread her hands, "—then I was wrong, and you may have my apologies, and we will all have a very silly story to tell."

She paused. "Unless, of course, the First Claw of the Border would like to tell me, right now, in front of everyone, that there is something in that crypt worth protecting."

Kael looked at her.

He saw her calculation, her trap, her certainty. He saw the corner she had painted him into: watch her burn the chapel and Lila with it, or give himself away in front of the whole Border.

"A guardian has no wants. Only duties," he said, and his voice did not shake.

"Then you won't mind the fire." Elaine's smile widened. "Dawn, then. I look forward to the smoke."

She swept out. The hall emptied around him.

Rhett was at his side in an instant, whispering, "Chief. Chief. We've got one night. One night, and she's watching every door. What do we do?"

Kael looked at the map. At the chapel. At the tiny mark of the crypt, under all that stone.

"Exactly what she expects," he said.

The night was clear and cold and full of watching eyes.

Kael moved through the Border like a ghost, and he knew he was being watched—the east parapet, the shadow that had been there every night since Elaine arrived, tracking him. He let them watch. He let them see him leave the garrison, cross the yard, and walk—calmly, openly, in full view—toward the chapel.
